Please join us in developing a new generation of Long Island leaders!

The 2013 Long Island Youth Summit (LIYS) will be held at Dowling College on Friday, March 15, 2013 from 8.30 A.M. to 1:30 P.M. The Summit is designed to engage high school students in an exploration of important current socio-economic and socio-medical issues. Participation in the Summit will be determined competitively and based solely on student project outcomes.

At the Summit students participate in issue-related workshops and work collaboratively with some of Long Island's most respected leaders in, business, government, education, environment and civic activism, in addition to other fields. Student input and proposed solutions are actively sought.

The topics of the Summit include environmental issues such as renewable energy, protection of water, and open space; issues of economic growth and employment; race, class & education on Long Island; issues of housing and transportation; government structure and civic activism on Long Island; and socio-medical issues such as high school bullying, the effects of social networking, and the impact of poverty and poor housing on health.

We ask that you tell your students about the LIYS and encourage them to pursue this unique opportunity. Please direct them to the Summit website at www.dowling.edu/youthsummit. Your efforts in promoting student involvement in the 2013 Long Island Youth Summit are greatly appreciated.

Please refer to enclosed copies pertaining to information that is posted on our website. The materials include Summit Workshop Topics, Focus Questions, Fact Sheets, Dear Students letter and two Newsday articles about the Summit. (Please do not provide the Fact Sheets to students. Use the fact sheets as your own reference tool as needed.)

In order to participate in the Summit, students must identify the issue of interest to them, research that issue using the focus questions provided, and produce a project. Students' research will prepare them to participate in the Summit.

Project options include: an essay; a short video or film; or, an art or photography portfolio. Students may collaborate in groups of up to ten students on a single project. Specific project requirements are outlined in the "Dear Students" letter (copy enclosed) on the website. Art/photography projects should include a brief written explanation of the project statement.

All Long Island high schools may forward up to twenty (20) student projects which they have determined to be their best. Those projects must be received by the LIYS Selection Committee at Dowling College no later than Friday, February 22, 2013. Essays can be submitted via the website or, as with all other projects, they can be mailed or delivered to: LIYS Selection Committee, Provost's Office, Room 226, Fortunoff Hall, Dowling College, 150 Idle Hour Boulevard, Oakdale NY 11769.

Submitted projects will be evaluated on the basis of five rubrics: (1) how many topic issue questions have been answered; (2) how well (in depth) a selected topic is covered; (3) is there an original research and/or a creative contribution to a project; (4) have students presented their own ideas about the future of Long Island and/or solutions to the issues; (5) quality of presentation and quality of content integration.

We expect to select approximately 250 student finalists who will be invited to attend the Summit. Students selected to participate in the Summit will receive a Certificate of Participation for the 2013 LIYS.

There is no cost to submit projects or attend the Summit on March 15th, 2013. Students should be accompanied to the Summit by a school representative who will be present throughout the event. Breakfast and lunch will be provided to all attendees at no charge.

If you have questions about the Summit at any time, we would like to hear from you. You can send your questions via the website ("Contact Us"), through e-mail (rogersn@dowling.edu), or call us at 631-244-3116.

We look forward to seeing your students on March 15th!
