Participants will work with medical experts on proposing solutions to a number of socio-medical issues that affect young people on Long Island. In the workshop on Bullying, Cyber-bullying, and Social Networking students will discuss how to recognize patterns of bullying and cyber-bullying. Students will also discuss positive and negative issues that may arise during the use of on-line social networks, including the issue of cyber-bullying. The goal of the workshop is to come up with ideas of what can be done to stop bullying and cyber-bullying in and outside of the school environment. At the 2012 LIYS, this workshop was moderated by Dr. Peter D’Amico, Director of Child and Adolescent Psychology at the Long Island Jewish Medical Center, Dr. Damaris Miranda, Child Psychologist, and Dr. Rashesh Dholakia, Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Fellow at the North Shore-LIJ Health System. Participants in the Effects of Poverty and Health focused on what can be done to prevent health issues in students coming from backgrounds of lower socio-economic status. At the 2012 LIYS, this workshop was moderated by Jennifer Mieres, MD, Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer, and Amit Powar, MD of the North Shore LIJ Health System. The Teens and the Abuse of Prescription Medication is a new socio-medical topic that we are introducing for the 2013 LIYS.
