In this workshop, students will get a chance to discuss how the economic and business structure of Long Island functions and learn about economic challenges to our region. Participants will also learn about how a shortage of alternative housing and limited public transportation networks affect Long Island's economy and communities. Students will be asked to come up with creative solutions about how to improve Long Island's economy, housing choices and transportation networks. This new workshop integrates four different workshops that were run separately in 2012. The experts for the 2012 workshops included Jeannine Maynard, Program Director at the Uniondale Community Council, Scott Martella, Suffolk County Representative of the Office of Governor Andrew Cuomo; Kristen Walsh, Long Island Regional Director, and Jon Cardinal, Legislative Director/ National Economic Policy Director of the Office of U.S. Senator Kirsten E. Gillibrand; Bill Cunningham, Vice President for Governmental Relations at the North Shore LIJ Health System; Hon. Steven Flotteron, Councilman of the Town of Islip; Robert M. Scheiner of firm H2M, and Eric Alexander, Executive Director, and Elissa Ward, Sustainability Director, at Vision Long Island.
