Dr. Christopher Boyko, Chair and Associate Professor of Biology at Dowling College, was asked by the Wall Street Journal to comment on the recent discovery of a massive swarm of crabs caught on video off the Pacific coast of Panama by researchers from Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute. These crabs, actually a species of squat lobster that is more closely related to hermit crabs than to true crabs, made up the densest such grouping ever seen. Dr. Boyko suggested that these crabs may have been so abundant because oceanic upwellings provided nutrients to the juvenile, planktonic, crabs and allowed a bumper crop of adults to settle to the bottom in this area.
