Author: Neil Shubin
This is a great little book. Shubin, a paleontologist and developmental biologist, does a good job showing how we can understand one of the essential messages of evolution. We all have parents that had parents that had parents that had parents. If we go back far enough in time, millions of generations, our parents would be fish. Though we may not look much like a fish these days…well, Shubin asks us to take another look and reconsider that. Maybe we do look like fish. Shubin enables you to see your resemblance to your great, great, (repeat 107 times) grandparents. Our eyes, ears, hands and even the location of our testes are our genetic legacies from fish brethren. If you like this book, I’d strongly recommend Carl Zimmer’s book, At The Water’s Edge. Actually, read everything that Carl Zimmer has written.
