Tweet, tweet. Much has been made about the role text messaging, tweeting, and Facebook played in the recent Egyptian uprising. CNN has done multiple stories on the subject. Watching them, you’d come to the conclusion this technology will usher in a period of uprisings by oppressed people all over the world. I regret disappointing you.

The GSA celebrated Valentine’s Day this year by hosting a create-your-own Valentine event for the Dowling Community. On February 10th, a table filled with a wide assortment of craft items was set up near the entrance of Racanelli. Colored paper, scrapbooking designs, stickers, glue, glitter pens, markers, and other items were scattered around to make for a youthful, fun craft table. Anyone who took part in the event was given the option of creating a donation Valentine which would be sent to troops fighting for America overseas.

After a great fall semester filled with good times, productive meetings, and great campus events, the Drama Club is ready to start its spring semester. March will be quiet, but only in order to plan the great things happening in April; one such event will be Performing Arts Night and will be held on April 14th. P.A.N. is in its second year, after a wonderful start in spring 2010.

The germ of democracy is alive and well as a wave of justice and empowerment ripples through the Arab world and beyond. Though the objectives of protesters may differ, the aim remains the same: end the reign of oppressive rulers. Throwing a stone into the still sea of oppression, the youth of Egypt have seemingly awoken people who dare change the world. The changes that will ultimately come out of the Egyptian Revolution of 2011 are still undetermined, but it is certainly a start towards a more free world.

Federal officials announced recently that the fluoride levels in the U.S. water supply should be limited because the additive is damaging children’s teeth; they are acknowledging the first restrictions in over 50 years of public water supply. According to a Bloomberg.com article written by authors Cortez and Wayne, the Department of Health and Human Services explains how drinking water should contain the lowest amount of the mineral, while the Environmental Protection Agency reviews the maximum level allowable.

Recent studies by global food experts suggest that the effects of climate change may extend to the prices of agriculture, and therefore food prices. It is projected that there will be an increase of nearly 12 degrees F by the year 2050, which may lead to significant problems for farmers. The drastic rise in food prices (with some estimates projecting an increase of 100% in the price of corn) would be the result of a decrease in productivity and increase in demand.

The invention of animation exposed artists with an opportunity to capture motion and time in a creative and innovative manner. The oldest animations may have only captured a small amount of time or created simplistic designs, but they formulated the groundwork for the animation we see in our present day. Some of the oldest techniques used for animation were time consuming and over-complicated, but each had their own impact on animation history.

Cell phone provider Verizon Wireless has announced that the massively-popular iPhone is available on their network, after months of rumors and speculation. The device was previously restricted to AT&T customers due to an exclusivity deal that was in place at the launch of the phone. A CDMA version of the phone means compatibility with Verizon’s network, with little differences to its AT&T counterpart. Since the technology behind the device is different, talking on the phone and using data is not possible.

There is little question that both scientific and social interest in Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) is increasing. Seldom does even one week pass without a news story, a newspaper article, a magazine piece, or a character portrayal on television or in movies involving autism. This can be bittersweet for those directly involved or affected by ASD. With increased awareness come the benefits of exposure, focus, attention, and interest. However, there also comes an opportunity for an influx of invalid, inaccurate, and unfounded information producing either quixotic stories of hope or charlatans offering a gamut of treatments

These sleepless nights greet me
With a certain familiarity.
This open window offers a breeze
Of cleanliness and clarity. Maybe I’m too afraid to dream
Because I’m so accustomed to this nightmare.

On the gentle breeze float familiar voices
Of those who have passed, of a time long lost,
The echo of the distant chimes; their signal to the world,
Their call to me.

Thousands of students have walked the hallways of Dowling College. Some we see intermittently between classes, others we sit next to for four years and forget their name in the years after graduation. We form short term friendships with some students and others we befriend for life. However, very few students can leave their mark on a college and its students as James Browning has.

Sick of capes? X-ray vision? Spandex? There’s none of that in Northlanders. Written by Brian Wood and published by adult-themed publisher, Vertigo, an imprint of comic-giant DC, Northlanders is a consistently solid comic. Written in various unconnected arcs, Northlanders concerns Vikings from all parts of Northern-Europe during the Viking Age.

Yes, I am turning twenty-one this month! So what should I write about? The obvious choice would be cocktails, but, instead, I decided to share my favorite meal with you. Everyone has that one comfort food that makes them feel all warm and fuzzy inside, and, once you put it in your mouth, you feel like you’re floating on a cloud….There are also some foods I like to call “bucket-meals”: just like people have bucket-lists, I propose they have bucket-meals (the last thing you’d want to eat before you die).

What makes a star athlete? A six-foot-six mountain of muscle? Perhaps. How about a four-foot-two determined powerhouse? Definitely! The New York Towers is just that, a championship star-filled basketball team of powerful Little People athletes. They are not kids, they are not a joke – they are intelligent, determined basketball players who teach a valuable lesson.
