North American in Origin, Species: Quercus coccinea
This is one of a pair of Scarlet Oak Trees planted on either side of the building now known as the Curtin Student Center. Back when the Vanderbilt’s lived at Idle Hour, this building was known as the Coach House. It was here that Mr Vanderbilt kept his prize horses. The symmetrical planting of these two mighty oaks, on either side of the Coach House, suggests they were planted to shade the horses and the building. The Coach House is one of the earliest built structures on the Idle Hour Estate, so these trees could have been planted in 1882, probably as mature trees.
