European in Origin, Species: Acer Pseudoplatanus
Formerly known as “Our Second Mystery Tree” this tree was identified by Dr. Richard Wilkens as a Planetree Maple on October 20, 2008.
The tree is located near the entrance of Fortunoff Hall. We know it was planted as a mature tree, sometime between 1900 - 1907. In this post card of Idle Hour, taken around 1901, there is no tree visible near the window of what is now known as Room 110.
Compare that image to this post card, taken around 1907. You will notice a very large tree near the window of what is now known as Room 110.
Compare that post card to this picture taken in April 2008.
