Dutch Schultz was a New York City based gangster who went into hiding between January 1933 and November 1934. Much of his business at that time was in rum-running. Legend has it that Dutch stayed at Idle Hour during some of those 22 months he was in hiding and used Idle Hour’s tunnels for his anti-prohibition and liquor distribution activities. (Prohibition ended in December 1933.)
