Campus Mourns Loss of Deacon James Pickel

Deacon James Pickel, 61, who served the Campus Ministry Parish for the diocese of Rockville Centre and has been at Dowling College for this program since 1999, passed away on July 14, 2004 after being ill for a brief period.
Since being ordained to the permanent diaconate on May 30, 1981 by Bishop John R. McGann, Pickel served at Our Lady of Lourdes Parish in Massapequa and St. Martin of Tours Parish in Amityville. At Dowling, he took on a number of responsibilities including leading weekly communion services and helping students resolve both school related and personal issues. While at Dowling he was able to make an impact on many students.
Pickel received a bachelor’s degree in education from St. John’s University. He also earned a Master of Arts in theology at the Seminary of the Immaculate Conception in Huntington. He went on to teach high school English for nearly 33 years, receiving the Community Service Award from the Bellmore Merrick United Secondary Teachers Association.
He is survived by his wife, Judith, a son and daughter, two graddaughters and his brother and three sisters.
