Citing Your Resources

Doing ethical research means citing sources. It is critical to credit writers for their work and their contributions to your research. To not do so is unethical and leads to plagiarism - unintentionally or not. Here are some sources to help you cite properly and to avoid the problem of plagiarism.

Maintained by the department of Health and Human Services, this tool provides you with information on how well the hospitals in your area care for all their adult patients with certain medical conditions. Hospital Compare was created through the efforts of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), the Department of Health and Human Services, and other members of the Hospital Quality Alliance: Improving Care Through Information (HQA).

International Bibliographic Information on Dietary Supplements (IBIDS)
IBIDS contains bibliographic records, including abstracts published in international scientific journals, on the topic of dietary supplements, such as vitamins, minerals, herbal and botanical supplements. The general public, scientists, researchers, and other interested parties will be able to search the database using keywords to obtain the citations of research journal articles. Medline: List of Indexed Journals
Over 5000 journals have been indexed for MEDLINE as of January 2007 and are listed in four sections: (1) Alphabetic listing by abbreviated title, followed by full title; (2) Alphabetic listing by full title, followed by abbreviated title; (3) Alphabetic listing by subject field; and (4) Alphabetic listing by country of publication. More detailed bibliographic data and information about indexing coverage for serials cited in MEDLINE/PubMed can be found in LocatorPlus, NLM's online catalog.

Morbidity & Mortality Weekly Report
The MMWR weekly contains data on specific diseases as reported by state and territorial health departments and reports on infectious and chronic diseases, environmental hazards, natural or human-generated disasters, occupational diseases and injuries, and intentional and unintentional injuries. Also included are reports on topics of international interest and notices of events of interest to the public health community.

PubMed Journals from the National Institute of Health
PubMed Central is a free digital archive of biomedical and life sciences journal literature at the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH), developed and managed by NIH's National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) in the National Library of Medicine (NLM). With PubMed Central, NLM is taking the lead in preserving and maintaining unrestricted access to the electronic literature, just as it has done for decades with the printed biomedical literature. PubMed Central aims to fill the role of a world class library in the digital age. It is not a journal publisher. NLM believes that giving all users free and unrestricted access to the material in PubMed Central is the best way to ensure the durability and utility of the archive as technology changes over time.

Virtual Life Sciences Library
To help faculty, researchers, and students in the life sciences discover common interests and make connections, the Cornell University Library has created a virtual life sciences community that uses an entity-relationship ontology model to organize and present information on people, research, and education activities. Excepts only available without subscription to the DSM-IV and symptom index. Helpful when quickly trying to identify disorder and related DSM section number.

Medline Plus
MedlinePlus brings together authoritative information from NLM, the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and other government agencies and health-related organizations. Preformulated MEDLINE searches are included in MedlinePlus and give easy access to medical journal articles. MedlinePlus also has extensive information about drugs, an illustrated medical encyclopedia, interactive patient tutorials, and latest health news.
