Citing Your Resources

Doing ethical research means citing sources. It is critical to credit writers for their work and their contributions to your research. To not do so is unethical and leads to plagiarism - unintentionally or not. Here are some sources to help you cite properly and to avoid the problem of plagiarism.

Biographical Resources:
Women in world history:a biographical encyclopedia.
Chambers biographical dictionary. A single volume encyclopedia containing major figures in world history.
Encyclopedia of world biography. Multi-volume encyclopedia containing major figures in world history.
Great lives from history: Ancient and Medieval series. A five-volume set of biographical sketches, arranged alphabetically, of 470 individuals whose contributions influenced world culture and the social development of societies flourishing in earlier centuries.
Women in the Middle Ages: An encyclopedia.


Historical Atlases:
Ancient history atlas. This simple atlas is useful for visualizing empires and movements.
Hammond historical atlas of the world. A collection of maps showing borders of significant empires, patterns of migration, population, and more.
Muir’s historical atlas: Ancient, medieval, and modern. This is one of the classic historical atlases. This atlas is useful for locating places.
The Anchor atlas of world history. This multi-volume atlas is useful for tracing migrations, movements, and themes through history, i.e., path of Bubonic Plague, Roman roads in Britain.
