Citing Your Resources
Doing ethical research means citing sources. It is critical to credit writers for their work and their contributions to your research. To not do so is unethical and leads to plagiarism - unintentionally or not. Here are some sources to help you cite properly and to avoid the problem of plagiarism.

Ben's Guide to U.S. Government for Kids (GPO)
This database, produced by the Government Printing Office, describes federal government for grades K-2, 3-5, 6-8, 9-12 and teachers/parents. Includes information on the United States, historic documents, branches of government, national versus state authority, how laws are made, elections and citizenship.
CYFERnet: Children, Youth and Families Education and Research Network
A national network of land grant university faculty and county extension educators,e.g., Cornell, CYFERnet supports community-based educational programs for children, youth, parents, and families.
Developing Educational Standards
An annotated list of Internet sites with K-12 educational standards and curriculum frameworks documents maintained by Charles Hill and the Putnam Valley Schools in New York and the Wappingers Central School District. Provides links to standards by individual states or subject area.

McREL Standards Database
A compendium of standards and benchmarks for K-12 education compiled by Mid-contentient Research for Education and Learning. Reports are organized by subject area. Review backbround, history and timeline for "A Nation At Risk," and the development of standards.
National Center for Education Statistics
Institute for Educational Sciences (IES)of the U.S. Department of Education provides a major compilation of statistical data for education.
New York State School Report Cards
Provides data from Pre-K to 12, Non-Public Schools, Post Secondary and Alternate Schools. Link to Property Tax Reports, School District Budgets, and Statistical Profiles of Public Schools.
NYSTE Preparation Guides and Information
This site contains downloadable .pdf test guides, as well as information on registration and score reporting. Dowling also has many of these guides available at our periodicals window. Ask your librarian, or search the Dowling Library Catalog using the search terms: Teacher Certification.
TeacherTube - The 'YouTube' for Sharing Educational Videos
TeacherTube is a terrific resource to share, upload and download educationally related videos and information. Essentially, it is YouTube for teachers. It has a similar look and feel, has a similar interface for uploading, and a similar method to embed videos on other pages.The big difference - this site is dedicated to educational videos. The idea is that if students click on the TeacherTube logo they are taken to a much safer site. TeacherTube's aim is to provide an online community for sharing instructional videos.... in a much safer forum. Diligent efforts are also made to monitor and bring down content that is inappropriate for this forum.
White House for Kids
Especially designed for children, this site offers news and events, games, puzzles, and even includes an area where children can participate in polls.
CIA for Kids
Divided K-5th and 6th-12th, kids can read more about the CIA, play interactive games, and 'help' the CIA solve some puzzles. Throughout this site, there are also some "top secret" things kids won’t find anywhere else...
