Finding Books on Boxing
We have both print books and ebooks listed in our library catalog. Here are two good ways to search for them:
Keyword. Looking for a specific person/place/thing? Do a keyword search for your topic with the name or phrase in quotes. This will find you any item in the catalog that has that phrase in its description. Capitalization doesn’t matter but make sure you spell the name right. And look for synonyms and alternate phrases to describe what you’re looking for:
- “Muhammad Ali”, “Cassius Clay”
- “Madison Square Garden”
- “Iron Mike”
Subject Headings. Do a subject search for your boxer: last name, first name. This will find any item that has been assigned their name as a subject heading - meaning that the item is primarily about them.

Many of our boxing books are together on the shelves under the call number GV1120–30s.
Keep in mind that your individual topics may take you to other sections. Fight Pictures, a book about boxing movies, is on the shelves at PN 1995.9.B69 S77 2008.

Search the full text of the New York Times going back over 150 years.
Sports Illustrated (1992 - current)
Search just in Sports Illustrated back to 1992.
Lexis Nexis
Search either their newspapers or magazines under “document type” to find news coverage dating back in some cases to the 1980s.
