Peer Mentoring Programs

SGA Club, Keeping it Real (KIR):
Club Creator and Advisor: Jane Bertsch-Wells, Student Services Coordinator
This co-curricular club was by created students to respond to the academic and social needs of the Dowling student population.  Click here for the SGA club page.

Peer 2 Peer Program:
This program began as a partnership between the Student Services Department and Dowling College Honors Program. Honors students started to use their community service hours to tutor/mentor Dowling students. Many Presidential and Rudolph Scholars have since followed suit and participate in the program as well. All Peer 2 Peer volunteers have undergone an academic background check so that the subjects they tutor are matched to their areas of expertise.

Peer 2 Peer in Remedial Classrooms:
In the Fall of 2011, Peer 2 Peer volunteers served as push-in tutors for the remedial math and English classes. A modified version of this program will run again for the Fall of 2012, where a select group of Peer 2 Peer tutors will work in the remedial math and English classes that have been set up for the Enhanced Right Start student population.

Placement Procedure:   College transcripts are reviewed for transfer students and Dowling students who are sophomores and beyond. High school transcripts of all freshman students are reviewed. Grades and test scores determine the math and/or English expertise of all these students.

Orientation/Supervision:   Each fall semester Peer 2 Peer volunteers must attend an orientation that focuses on interpersonal skills and appropriate classroom policies and protocol expected of students volunteers. All volunteers must sign a contract where FERPA issues are given special consideration. The program supervisor provides guidance and supervision for Peer 2 Peer volunteers throughout semester, periodically contacting professors and students, monitoring progress, and fielding all concerns and questions.

Formal Study of Program:  The College administered a mixed method study in 2011 that examined the effectiveness of the Peer 2 Peer program that proved the program to be a success.

If you have any questions regarding the Peer 2 Peer program, please contact the program developer and supervisor, Jane Bertsch-Wells: bertschj@dowling.edu.
