John T. Tanacredi, Ph.D.
Chairman, Department of Earth and Marine Sciences
Director, Center for Estuarine, Environmental and Coastal Oceans Monitoring

Dr. Tanacredi has served as Chairman of the Department of Earth and Marine Sciences for more than a decade, forging cooperative agreements between the department and the National Park Service, Town of Islip, and National Weather Service, among others. Prior arriving at Dowling, he was a conservation biologist with the National Park Service, severing at Gateway National Park and other locations for nearly 30 years.

In the course of his career, Dr. Tanacredi has produced more than 50 peer-reviewed scientific publications and five books and  has led scientific and academic research expeditions to many of the most environmentally significant sites on the planet, including Easter Island and locations in the Mediterranean, Costa Rica, Belize, eastern Canada, China, Taiwan, the Caribbean, and Bermuda.

Dr. Tanacredi holds a Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering from Polytechnic University, an M.S. in environmental health sciences from the Institute of Health Sciences at CUNY Hunter College, and a B.S. in Biological Sciences from CUNY Richmond College. He also maintains research associate positions at the American Museum of Natural History in the Department of Invertebrate Zoology, the Wildlife Conservation Society, the Osborn Laboratories for Marine Research at the New York Aquarium, and the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory  at Columbia University.
