Professor Smirnov’s Class Illustrates Earth’s History

Geo1 Geo2 Geo5

What are the students doing? In my Geology II class (ESC 1028) we cover the concept of “Deep Time.” In order to help students visualize what 4.5 billion years of Earth’s history looks like compared to the mere 200,000 years anatomically modern humans have been around, they calculate and measure out where major geologic events (extinction of dinosaurs, Moon forming impact, etc) plot along a 150 foot section of the sidewalk. It is quite astonishing to discover that out of the 150 feet of Earth’s geologic history, anatomically modern humans were only occupy the last 8 thousandths of an inch.
