Juan Carlos Alicea of Dowling College participated in the Summer 2005 Pre-Service Teacher Program at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) where he conducted cutting-edge chemistry research and developed educational modules to integrate his research into teaching high school chemistry. He discussed the significance of his work for society with Dr. Thomas L. Windham, NSF Senior Advisor for Science and Engineering Workforce, at a BNL symposium.

Stanley A. Rocke (back row, center) co-led the 2005 Summer Science Internship Program for the Dowling College Center for Minority Teacher Development and Training. The program partners minority high school students who want to become teachers with pre-service teachers in Dowling's teacher training program. Students engage in hands-on field research and classes in research methodology in collaboration with BNL and Batelle, Inc. Stanley gained first-hand experience leading high school students in the scientific discovery process and in presentation of their work.

Gina Ortolani (front row, left) co-organized the 9th Annual Symposium on the South Shore Estuary at Dowling College with PI Lori Zaikowski (third from left). Pictured are the winners of the 2005 high school environmental science research poster session. Over 200 high school students and teachers participated in workshops, poster sessions, and lectures on current topics in science.
