Shatina Anderson, a sophomore from Riverhead, and freshman Kayane Simpson of Central Islip, are the first-ever recipients of Samuel Walton Scholarships at Dowling College.
Samuel Walton, one of Long Island's leading real estate developers, recently established the Samuel Walton Scholarship fund at Dowling College to support the education of African-American students majoring in accounting. The award will be given to two students annually.
The scholarships are made possible by Mr. Walton's annual gift of $25,000 and will be dedicated to the recipient's tuition, room and board and other expenses. The students will receive the scholarship for each of the four years of their baccalaureate degree program, as long as they remain in good standing and maintain a 3.0 grade point average.
In order to qualify for the scholarship a student must:
- Be a Long Island resident of African-American descent planning to major in Accounting at Dowling College as a full-time student.
- Have an exemplary high school record of achievement.
- Have a track record of motivation in and out of the classroom.
- Be in financial need.
Applications for the Samuel Walton Scholarship may be obtained at the Dowling College Office of Enrollment Services. For more information, call 631-244-3303.
