Dowling College Professor To Discuss Key Issues Of 2004 Election

Dr. John R. Martin, Jr., Associate Professor of Political Science at Dowling College, will discuss the wide array of key electoral contests across the nation as he presents, "The 2004 Elections" on Wednesday, September 29 at 7 pm in the Fortunoff Hall Hunt Room at Dowling's Rudolph Campus in Oakdale. The event kicks off a yearlong Faculty Lecture Series, and is free and open to the public.

In his talk, Dr. Martin will devote particular attention to the race for the White House. He will present an analysis of key battleground states, and the races therein, which, in turn, will determine the outcome of the Electoral College vote, as well as the balance of power between the competing national political parties. Which states are "in play?" What political forces and attitudes within these states are likely to affect the outcome of the vote? What are the key issues of policy and character driving the voting decisions of citizens? These and other topics will be addressed, and ample opportunity will be available for audience questions and discussion.

Dr. Martin has been on the faculty at Dowling College since 1995, and previously taught at Rutgers University, Vanderbilt University, Wabash College (Crawfordsville, IN), and Moravian College and Lehigh University, both located in Bethlehem, PA.

Dr. Martin has received a Faculty Development Grant through the National Science Foundation, and has written and lectured extensively on American politics and race relations in the United States. He earned a Master of Arts and Ph.D. in Political Science from Rutgers University.
