Dowling College Names Edward J. Fred 2004 Alumnus of the Year
Dowling College has named Edward J. Fred, President & CEO of Edgewood, NY-based CPI Aerostructures, Inc. (AMEX: CVU), and a 1980 graduate, as its 2004 Alumnus of the Year.
Mr. Fred, who has led his company to be among the fastest growing firms on Long Island and the Forbes #10 small business in America, will be honored at a dinner on Saturday, November 6 at the College's Rudolph Campus in Oakdale.
"Edward Fred is a shining example of how hard work combined with an exemplary education can result in extraordinary success," said Dr. Albert E. Donor, President of Dowling College. "We are proud of Ed's achievements and excited he is growing such a successful company right here on Long Island."
Mr. Fred commented, "I became president of a publicly held corporation with just one piece of paper in my hand, my degree from Dowling College. Dowling provided the opportunity to do actual accounting work inside companies with professors who were working accountants. When I graduated from Dowling I had a head start on other people entering the accounting field."
Mr. Fred has been an officer of CPI since 1995, starting as Controller. In April 1998, he was appointed CFO and several months later, he joined the Board of Directors. Following a series of successive promotions, Mr. Fred was named CEO in early 2003. He holds a Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting from Dowling College and Executive MBA from Hofstra University.
In 2004, Mr. Fred was named "Entrepreneurial Advocate" by the Long Island Association ("LIA"), and was a finalist for Ernst & Young's Annual Metro New York Entrepreneur of the Year. Over the past four years, CPI\'s compound annual growth rate in revenues and operating earnings have been 45% and 108%, respectively.
Founded in 1980, CPI Aerostructures is engaged in the contract production of structural aircraft parts principally for the U.S. Air Force and other branches of the armed forces. In conjunction with its assembly operations, CPI provides engineering, technical and program management services. Among the key programs that CPI supplies are the C-5A Galaxy cargo jet, the T-38 Talon jet trainer and the E-3 Sentry AWACS jet.
