Dowling College Minority Teacher Center Receives $5,000 Grant

Funding Enables Students To Attend Summer Science Institute at Brookhaven National Laboratory

Several students enrolled in Dowling College's Center for Minority Teacher Development and Training (CMTDT) program will participate in a Summer Science Institute at Brookhaven National Laboratory thanks to a $5,000 grant from Battelle Memorial Institute in partnership with BNL's Office of Educational Programs. The first-ever program will familiarize students with the geology of Long Island and focus on the island's major environmental problems and possible solutions.

"The premise of the program is to interest education majors in teaching science. Teachers who are excited about teaching science become a powerful force in encouraging future generations of scientists," explained Lizette M. Washington, Director of the Dowling College CMTDT.

With the help of the Battelle grant, thirteen high school and college students involved with the CMTDT will work on several scientific projects in a real-world setting from August 2-13. Extensive fieldwork will be incorporated into the two-week session, including study of the Montauk Peninsula and field trips to a landfill and a recycling facility, as well as a wastewater treatment plant and various remediation sites at Brookhaven National Lab.

In addition, three high school students enrolled in the CMTDT will engage in intense chemistry, biology, physics, and environmental science studies from August 2-27 in the Brookhaven National Laboratory Minority High School Apprenticeship Program.

The Battelle Memorial Institute was established by Gordon Battelle in 1929 as a memorial to his family, leaders in America's early steel industry. Battelle Laboratory Management serves the U.S. Department of Energy in the operation of four leading-edge national laboratories, including Brookhaven National Laboratory. Battelle conducts $3 billion in annual research and development. Typically, this work results in between 50-100 patented inventions each year.
