Dowling College Receives $292,000 National Science Foundation Grant

Funding To Provide Scholarships For Computer Science and Mathematics Students

The National Science Foundation (NSF), through the NSF Computer Science, Engineering and Mathematics Scholarship Program, has awarded Dowling College a four-year grant totaling an estimated $292,000, which will help fund the College's effort to provide Long Island with well-trained technology professionals.

"These scholarships will allow Dowling to provide a college education to students who would not otherwise be able to attend due to financial limitations," said Dr. Albert E. Donor, President of Dowling College. "This grant is particularly important as it promotes education in computer science and mathematics, which is crucial to maintaining a well-trained technology workforce on Long Island."

The NSF grant, together with matching Dowling College scholarship funds, provides up to $6,250 per year for 15 to 25 full-time undergraduate students pursuing degrees in Mathematics or Computer Science. The CSMS project includes scholarships, faculty mentoring and career development support – all elements proven to result in a successful undergraduate experience.

The grant is a result of collaboration among Dowling College Computer Science and Mathematics faculty members, including Project Director Dr. Sandra Monteferrante, Professor of Mathematics, and Co-Project Directors, Dr. Herbert Bernstein, Professor of Computer Science, and Dr. Fred Rispoli, Professor of Mathematics.

"We look forward to expanding the population of math and computer science majors, and especially including traditionally underrepresented groups," said Dr. Monteferrante.

To be eligible for a CSMS Scholarship, a candidate must be a United States citizen, national, or permanent resident alien and must be majoring in mathematics or computer science. To apply for a scholarship, interested candidates should contact the Project Director, Dr. Sandra Monteferrante, Professor of Mathematics, at 631-244-3178 or Email her.
