Dowling College To Break Ground On Student Activity Center

Complex At Brookhaven Campus Will Feature Athletic Fields And Facilities

Dowling College will commemorate the start of construction on a new Student Activity Center at the College's 105-acre Brookhaven Campus in Shirley, NY, on Tuesday, June 15 at 11 a.m.

The planned facility will feature a 1,500-seat gymnasium, 2,500 theater-style seating, elevated track, weight room, Vytra Wellness Center, sports medicine facilities, locker rooms, meeting room, dining hall and offices. Outside will be tennis courts and fields for several sports, including baseball, softball, soccer, and lacrosse. Dowling's Athletics Hall of Fame will be relocated to the Center.

"This complex will be the centerpiece of Dowling's growing Brookhaven Campus, and host student gatherings, guest speakers, concerts, awards ceremonies and our commencements," explained Dr. Albert E. Donor, President. "These facilities will also be home to our extraordinarily successful sports teams. We are thrilled to be able to provide all our student-athletes with a most deserved home field advantage."

Dowling College's athletics program includes several successful men\'s and women\'s intercollegiate teams, which compete in the New York Collegiate Athletic Conference (NYCAC) and NCAA Division II, among them crew, soccer, baseball, softball, basketball, tennis, lacrosse, volleyball, cross country, golf, and equestrian teams.

Athletic fields will be completed during the first phase of work. Construction will take place adjacent to existing modern classroom buildings and a 274-bed residence hall that features one-, two-, and three-bedroom apartments.

Easily accessible, Dowling College's Student Activity Center will be located on William Floyd Parkway, south of the Long Island Expressway and north of Sunrise Highway.
