South Shore Estuary Discussed At Dowling College Symposium, Eighth Annual Event Features Workshops, High School Student Research

The eighth annual Symposium on the South Shore Estuary will be held on Wednesday, May 26, from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Dowling College's Rudolph Campus in Oakdale. Among the activities planned are discussions by researchers about their work in the Estuary, an environmental science research poster competition, teacher workshops, "hands-on" student workshops, an underwater 3-D film adventure, a clambake, and canoeing on the Connetquot River. Randy A. Daniels, New York State Secretary of State, will deliver the keynote address and present student awards.

Several workshops are offered, including chemical analysis of the Connetquot River with Chemist Michael Bannon; the collection and study of plankton with Marine Biologist Lou Siegel; examination of horseshoe crab anatomy and coral reef ecology in Dowling's coral reef lab with Professor Dr. John Tanacredi; Sea Urchin reproduction with Biologist and Dowling Professor Dr. Richard Wilkens; and exploration of the biodiversity of the South Shore Estuary by drawing wildlife samples with artist Brandon Ballengée in collaboration with Evelyn Silva.

All students will attend "The 3-D Underwater World of Sampson The Frog Fish," with Ed Jameson. Using the magic of 3-D underwater close up and macro photography, viewers will experience a guided tour of life on the lush coral reefs of Bonaire and Curacao through the eyes of Sampson, a very personable Frog Fish.

An environmental science research poster competition will display the work of more than 100 area high school students throughout the day in Fortunoff Hall. The research projects will be judged by members of the Dowling College faculty, and scientists from Brookhaven National Laboratories, U.S. Geological Survey, Cornell Cooperative Extension, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, Fire Island National Seashore, and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

The event, which is sponsored by the College's Departments of Chemistry and Earth and Marine Sciences and the Field Biology Club in cooperation with New York State Department of State Division of Coastal Resources and Management and AREAC (Aquatic Research and Environmental Assessment Center at Brooklyn College, is free and open to the public.
