Dowling College Athletics Earns National Recognition For Community Work
Dowling College's Department of Athletics has won a place on the National Consortium for Academics and Sports' (NCAS) Outreach and Community Service Honor Roll. The honor is presented annually by the NCAS, a national organization committed to supporting outreach programs of college athletic departments.
Dowling's College's student-athletes were praised for reaching more than 1,000 local youths during the 2002-2003 academic year through several outreach programs. Many Golden Lions visited area elementary schools during the year to discuss respect in oneself, sports and for others. Student-athletes also participated in the American Heart Walk, hosted a holiday party for underprivileged children and their families, and held basketball and softball clinics for local youths. Many game tickets were given away to area elementary, middle and high school students and their families, who were hosted by Dowling's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.
"This award represents Dowling's commitment to developing leadership in its student-athletes and caring for the community," said Richard E. Lapchick, Executive Director of the NCAS.
"We are very proud of the initiative, enthusiasm and dedication that our student-athletes demonstrate in participating in many community programs on Long Island," said Bob Dranoff, Athletic Director at Dowling College. "Athletes from all of our many sports teams are involved throughout the year. Work in the community, particularly with children, is an important facet of being an athlete at Dowling."
