Internationally Acclaimed Poet Dr. James Ragan To Read At Dowling College
Internationally acclaimed poet, Dr. James Ragan, will read his work in the Hunt Room of Fortunoff Hall at Dowling College's Rudolph Campus in Oakdale at 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, March 31. The event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served.
Director of the Graduate Professional Writing Program at the University of Southern California, Dr. Ragan is the recipient of numerous poetry honors, including two Fulbright professorships, the Emerson Poetry Prize, two Pushcart Prize nominations, and the Poetry Society of America Gertrude Blaytor Award.
Dr. Ragan's books of poetry include, The Hunger Wall, Lusions, and The World-Shouldering "I". In 1985, Dr. Ragan was one of three American poets, along with Robert Bly and Bob Dylan, invited to perform at the First International Poetry Festival in Moscow. His poetry has been translated into twelve European and Asian languages.
As a playwright and screenwriter, he has worked on projects with Clint Eastwood, Raymond Burr, Dyan Cannon, and Olympia Dukakis, among other notables, and was involved with the production of such films as "The Longest Yard", "The Border", Matilda", and Oscar-winner, "The Deer Hunter".
Dr. Ragan has appeared on numerous radio and talk shows, including Voice of America, and CNN's Showbiz Today. He earned a Telly Award in 1996 for his work as host of PBS's "Poet's Chamber".
Born in Slovakia, Dr. Ragan emigrated to the U.S. at the age of five when his family settled in Pittsburgh. He has lived in Paris, Prague, London, Athens and Beijing and has been honored in the U.S. and abroad as an ambassador of poetry. Dr. Ragan earned his B.A. in English from St. Vincent College and his M.A. and Ph.D. from Ohio University. He has received honorary doctorates from the American College of Greece and Richmond, The American International University in London.
