Flying Lions Earn Top Recognition at NIFA National Championship
OAKDALE, NY – The Dowling College precision flight team, The Flying Lions, captured top recognition at the National Intercollegiate Flying Association (NIFA) National Championship in Terre Haute, Indiana, May 17-22, 2010 winning the coveted National Safety Award for the safest collegiate flight program in the nation. "The Flying Lions clearly demonstrated their safety expertise in all aspects of the competition against the biggest schools in the country and I am very proud of the flight team's accomplishments", said Dr. John Wensveen, Dean, School of Aviation. Dowling College pilot, Joe Daly, earned 12th place overall nationally in the challenging power-off landing event. The Flying Lions placed first at the NIFA Region VII Championship in October, 2009 earning the right to compete in the National Championship.
Approximately 450 students representing 29 academic institutions competed in the national championship including flight and landing events combined with academic ground-based testing.
The Flying Lions, under the direction of Dr. John Wensveen, are coached by Tom Daly, adjunct professor, Ron Lindenfeld, Assistant Coordinator of Aviation Academics, and Dowling College alumni, Captain Bruce Trimble, Captain Jim Record, and Captain Gerry Stonebridge.
