NCATE Steering Sub-Committee at Dowling College's School of Education Decides on Two Possibilities for a Computerized Data Assessment System

OAKDALE, NY - After an in-depth 6-week process, the NCATE Steering Sub-Committee at Dowling College's School of Education culminated with a decision to move forward with an extensive evaluation of two commercially available data assessment systems. The need for a computerized data assessment system has been emphasized by current School of Education accreditation processes. To meet this need a committee, co-chaired by Dr. Richard Bernato and Dr. Eric Shyman, was formed. The committee was comprised of faculty and staff representatives from all of the departments in the School of Education, as well as representatives from all other departments in the college including IT, Academic Computing, and Administration. In the course of the six weeks the committee attended webinars for five different data assessment systems. The committee evaluated the systems on a number of qualities including user-friendliness, comprehensiveness of the assessment capabilities, reporting capabilities, availability of templates for rubrics, compatibility with systems already used at Dowling (such as BlackBoard and Banner), as well as success with other colleges. After intense discussion and an anonymous voting process, the committee decided on two databases for consideration. A final decision will be made considering feedback from live, on-site demonstrations.
