Mr. Walker Hall, Social Studies Teacher at Sayville High School Named
Dowling College/News 12 Long Island Educator of the Month
OAKDALE, NY - Mr. Walker Hall, Social Studies Teacher & Department Chairperson, Sayville High School, was named a 2009-2010 Dowling College/News 12 Long Island Educator of the Month. Nominations were accepted from schools throughout Nassau and Suffolk counties, and a committee of distinguished educators selected the winners.
The Mission Statement of the Social Studies Department has defined Mr. Hall by stating his goals, "To develop student understanding, awareness, appreciation, sensitivity and compassion regarding the human condition - past and present." Mr. Hall has forged a department that is the envy of many.
Mr. Hall takes his role as a teacher who will touch the future very seriously and is constantly providing extraordinary opportunities for his staff and his students, such as the Celebration of Diversity, Habitat for Humanity, Hunger Relief Events, Darfur Awareness, Apartheid in South Africa Awareness Events, etc. Mr. Hall "practices what he teaches" in that in 2006-2007 he gave of his time and personal effort working for two weeks in an orphanage in Ghana, West Africa.
Mr. Hall is quick to give credit to his staff and students and does not like drawing attention to himself. Mr. Hall encouraged the official sanctioning of the History Club by the Board of Education which has sponsored a variety of activities including setting up a History Fair for 4th graders. Mr. Hall has arranged annual student debates on such issues as the war in Iraq, immigration, death penalty and the economic impact of Wal-Mart.
Dr. Clyde Payne, Dean of Dowling's School of Education says, "Mr. Hall is one of the many remarkable teachers Long Island has to offer, and it is an honor to provide him with the Educator of the Month award for his inspirational and outstanding service as a teacher." A TV spot featuring Mr. Hall will be shown on News 12 for a two week period, and Mr. Hall along with his colleagues will be honored again at Awards Dinner in June.
