Ms. Ellen Holzman, English Teacher, The Wheatley School, East Williston USFD Named
Dowling College/News 12 Long Island Educator of the Month
OAKDALE, NY – Ms. Ellen Holzman current English teacher at The Wheatley School, East Williston USFD has been named a 2009-2010 Dowling College/News 12 Long Island Educator of the month. Nominations were accepted from schools throughout Nassau and Suffolk counties, and a committee of distinguished educators selected the winners.
Ms. Holzman is respected by veteran and younger teachers and for her curricular knowledge, pedagogical skills and her dedication to excellence. Ms. Holzman collaborates well with other faculty members, sharing lesson plans, providing advice and exchanging ideas. Ms. Holzman works well with the broad range of students given to her each year; from those who struggle with English to those who are in the most demanding college-level English courses. Parents know that a year with Ms. Holzman will be productive and an engaging year for their child-filled with learning and enthusiasm. Ms. Holzman's voice is a critical part of the school; it serves to remind everyone of the school's wonderful traditions while also encouraging thoughtful change for the future.
Ms. Holzman is the advisor to The Wheatley Wildcat, an exemplary student publication that has won awards every year since she has become advisor in 1996. Ms. Holzman is the Assistant Curriculum Associate for English where her duties include arranging substitute coverage, training teachers to grade the Regents, scheduling student teachers and much more. The English department has said they could not survive a day without her performing to tasks at hand.
Ms. Holzman continues to be a contributor to the school district, a member of the Educational Advisory Committee, founding member of the East Williston Education Foundation, runs the Simmons Award Night, the coordinator of the Collegial Circle Book Group, and co-chaired the entire Middle States process. This statement is from a parent, "We are fortunate, indeed, to have a teacher of Ms. Holzman's exceptional intellect, passion and commitment in our school."
Dr. Clyde Payne, Dean of Dowling's School of Education says, "Ms. Holzman is one of the many remarkable teachers Long Island has to offer, and it is an honor to provide her with the educator of the month award for her inspirational and outstanding service as a teacher." A TV spot featuring Ms. Holzman will be shown on News 12 for a two week period, and Ms. Holzman along with her colleagues will be honored again at Awards Dinner in June.
