Ms. Cheryl Mitchell of East Moriches Middle School Named Dowling College/News 12 Long Island Educator of the Month

OAKDALE, NY - Ms. Cheryl Mitchell, Current Sixth Grade Teacher at East Moriches Union Free School District, has been named a 2009-2010 Dowling College/News 12 Long Island Educator of the Month. Nominations were accepted from schools throughout Nassau and Suffolk counties, and a committee of distinguished educators selected the winners.

Ms. Mitchell creates lessons that are interactive and hands-on, for example studying life in ancient Egypt by grinding grain between two stones, measuring in cubits and using hieroglyphics. Students in Ms. Mitchell's class become anthropologists, world travelers, genealogists, and even tackle recent world events such as the 9-11 attacks with comparisons to the Crusades.

Ms. Mitchell uses her classroom and the curriculum to reinforce and instruct struggling readers to become proficient at decoding and comprehending. Ms. Mitchell is not a talker of educational jargon; she is a practitioner of the proven researched driven methods that lead to the highest levels of student achievement. Ms. Mitchell is organized, dedicated and committed to making a difference.

Ms. Mitchell has involved her students in some major activities such as a weeklong celebration of academics and athletics through the Olympics, the playing of Electronic Jeopardy and developing podcasts that can be used throughout the school. Designed and created the lion costume for the Middle School play, The Wizard of Oz.

Ms. Mitchell decorates the showcases in the entrance of the Middle School. She also attends all school concerts and many sports events after school to show her support for both her present students and her former students.

Dr. Clyde Payne, Dean of Dowling's School of Education says, "Ms. Mitchell is one of the many remarkable teachers Long Island has to offer, and it is an honor to provide her with the educator of the month award for her inspirational and outstanding service as a teacher." A TV spot featuring Ms. Mitchell will be shown on News 12 for a two week period, and Ms. Mitchell along with her colleagues will be honored again at Awards Dinner in June.
