Explore The Andrea Doria With Author Joe Haberstroh
Presentation Details One Of The Most Dangerous Dives Off Long Island
Pulitzer Prize-winning author and Newsday Editor Joe Haberstroh will discuss the fascinating tale of the exploration of the sunken ship Andrea Doria – detailed in his new book, "Fatal Depth: Deep Sea Diving, China Fever, and the Wreck of the Andrea Doria" – on Wednesday, April 21 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. in the Hunt Room of Fortunoff Hall on Dowling College's Rudolph Campus in Oakdale.
The first 20 people registering for this event will receive a free copy of "Fatal Depth". The event is free and open to the public. Lunch will be served. Seating is limited and the public is encouraged to register prior to April 16 by calling 631-244-3394.
"Fatal Depth" follows one scuba diving charter boat, the Seeker, over two summers as five of its customers die, all while exploring the fabled wreck of the Andrea Doria off Long Island. Based on an award-winning series of articles that appeared in Newsday, the book probes the circumstances behind each death, the subculture of deep-wreck diving, and safety issues surrounding the sport of technical diving. The St. Petersburg Times said the book, "gives about a close a look at the world below that you'll get without strapping on a set of steel 120s."
Since 1997, Joe Haberstroh has been the "On the Waters" columnist for Newsday. He writes about coastal issues, the marine environment, commercial fishing and maritime culture. In 1997, he was a member of a large team at the newspaper that won the Pulitzer Prize for coverage of the crash of TWA Flight 800. For the past 18 months, he has been one of the lead writers for Newsday's "Our Natural World" series. Previously, Haberstroh worked at The Seattle Times. "Fatal Depth" is his first book.
