OAKDALE, NY – Dowling College is proud to announce the arrival of Dr. Lee A. Newman as research scholar. Dr. Newman is currently employed as an Associate Biochemist at the Brookhaven National Lab. While at Dowling, Dr. Newman will primarily be conducting research at the College, while simultaneously working and continuing her research at the Lab. Dr. Newman's role at Dowling will bring additional research opportunities to the students and faculty at Dowling.

"Dr. Newman's presence at Dowling will undoubtedly contribute significantly to the continued momentum of scientific and academic advancement here at the College," said Provost Linda Ardito.

Dr. Newman has extensive experience working in higher education, having previously worked as an Assistant Professor in the Arnold School of Public Health at the University of South Carolina, Assistant Research Scientist in the Savannah River Ecology Laboratory at the University of Georgia and Research Assistant Professor in the College of Forest Resources at the University of Washington. In addition to her experience in education, Dr. Newman also was President of Verdant Technologies.

Dr. Newman's research interests involve the use of plants to address environmental problems, mostly through phytoremediation and bioenergy research. Major research is focused on providing an understanding of the genetic mechanisms controlling solvent degradation in plants, field applications of phytoremediation, environmental toxicity resulting from plant exposure to toxicants, using microbes to enhance remediation potential of plants, using native plants for remediation and restoration and using native plants and microbial enhanced plants for bioenergy production. Additionally, she is interested in the role of plants in monitored natural attenuation and carbon sequestration, and plant interactions with emerging contaminants such as nanoparticles.
