Successful Science Symposium Addressed 100 Participants
Keynote Speakers Discussed How Science Research Impacts Education
OAKDALE, NY – Participants learned about the strong impact science research can have on education from a unique insider view at Dowling College's American Chemical Society/National Science Foundation Symposium. This informative event featured Keynote Speakers Dr. Paul Bishop, Environmental Engineering Program Director at the National Science Foundation (NSF), Robert Gaffney, Dowling College President, and Ms. Preya Shah, Ward Melville High School Senior and 2009 Intel Science Talent Search Semi-Finalist.
Keynote Speakers discussed science research and technology and its relationship to Higher Education, providing interesting perspectives as they dissected the relationship, responsibilities and influence that elected officials and institutions of higher learning have on the development and support of leading edge research in the fields of science and technology.
Special guest, Ms. Preya Shah delivered a presentation on her Intel Award winning research project titled, "Combating Cancer: Design and Synthesis of Dual-Warhead Tumor-Targeting Drug Conjugates." Ms. Shah's research has enabled her to design and synthesize a new drug that can be used towards cancer chemotherapy. President Gaffney awarded Preya Shah with a certificate of special recognition for her achievements.
The featured guest, Dr. Paul Bishop, Program Director, Division of Chemical, Bioengineering, Environmental and Transport Systems (CBET), from the National Science Foundation, lectured from his personal research and findings related to the topics of science and the environment. Additionally, Dr. Bishop provided an insiders' view on the prospects of grant making and seeking.
"Long Island has long led the nation in science research and technology. By hosting someone of Dr. Paul Bishop's stature on Dowling College's campus, this further illustrates the kind of attention and interest Long Island and its regional institution's of Higher Education generate," said Mr. Arthur W. Perri, Jr., Director of Grants and Research Funding, Dowling College.
