Dowling Receives $190,000 Grant to Create Training Program for Finance Careers with Emphasis on Business Ethics
Schumer Fought For $190,000 Grant to Fund Creation of Ethics Training Curriculum at the Business School
Funding Will Also Support Programs Targeted to the Existing Long Island Financial Community to Strengthen It's Ability to Meet Challenges of the Current and Future Economic Environment
OAKDALE, NY - U.S. Senator Charles E. Schumer announced that Long Island's Dowling College has been awarded $190,000 from the U.S. Department of Education to emphasize business ethics in the School of Business. Under the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2009, Dowling College plans to strengthen, improve and enhance the School of Business curriculum through the creation and implementation of post-baccalaureate and advanced certificate programs. Dowling College's School of Business will make its primary mission to educate and prepare students for careers in finance while highlighting the importance of business ethics, provide educational programs for members of the financial and business services community in order to enhance their abilities to meet the challenges of the current and future economic environment, and provide educational programs to underserved populations in an effort to provide opportunities for careers and personal enrichment. The emphasis on ethics is vital to train young students in a post-recession world in order to prevent another economic meltdown in the future.
"Funding business ethics courses is a wise investment because it helps create well rounded business leaders who will make better decisions for their firms and our economy," Schumer said. "Millions of Americans were hurt by the recession and the cause of much of the pain was questionable business practices like excessive risk taking and short term thinking. Investing in Dowling College's School of Business is a step in the direction of preventing these mistakes from happening again."

Dowling College is using the funding to strengthen, improve and enhance the School of Business curriculum through the creation and implementation of post-baccalaureate and advanced certificate programs. The certificate programs will span the following areas: Financial Planning, Human Resources, Marketing, Project Management, Supervising Employees, Corporate Finance and Health Care Management. Highlighted in each of the certificate program curricula, will be an emphasis on business ethics. The proposed curriculum changes will mirror the mission of Dowling College to further its status as an "Institution of Higher Teaching" as well as meet the needs of the Congressionally-directed grant for $190,000 from the U.S. Department of Education.
