The Center for Minority Teacher Development and Training at Dowling College honored New York State Senator Caesar Trunzo and the New York State United Teachers (NYSUT) Effective Teaching Program at a Mardis Gras Jazz Celebration at the College on February 27.

Currently Deputy Majority Whip and immediate past Chairman of the Senate Transportation Committee, Senator Trunzo was cited for his enduring support of education programs, including the College Tuition Tax Credit, the College Choice Tuition Savings Program, and funding for Dowling College's Literacy Center in the Brentwood School District.

The NYSUT Effective Teaching Program was recognized for providing teachers throughout New York State with successful strategies and techniques through extensive research and dynamic workshops. Last year alone the ETP worked with 13,000 teachers, who in turn positively influenced the lives of tens of thousands of students.

Founded in April, 2003, with a $400,000 appropriation from the U.S. Department of Education, the Center for Minority Teacher Development and Training at Dowling College is already helping more than 200 students fulfill their dreams of becoming teachers. The Center is one of only a few in the nation dedicated exclusively to attracting minority students from disadvantaged circumstances to become teachers.

The Center works in partnership with The Urban League of Long Island, Inc., Adelante of Suffolk County, Inc. and other organizations. Companies such as Verizon have provided important financial support during the Center's inaugural year.
