Dowling College Participates in 2nd Annual Parent Conference in Wyandanch

OAKDALE, NY – GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs) and SNAP-Long Island will convene their 2nd annual Parents Conference at Wyandanch Memorial High School on Saturday, March 21, 2009 from 8:00 AM – 1:00 PM.

Suffolk Legislator DuWayne Gregory will offer keynote remarks on the theme "Parents as Heroes: Hope and Change." Lizette Washington, Director of the Center for Minority Teacher Dev. & Training at Dowling College, is on the GEAR UP board and will be participating in the conference as a vendor, and Rhoda Miller, Director of Student Support Services at Dowling College, will be giving a talk on being First in the Family to go to college.

This FREE event is open to parents, students, and others from Wyandanch and nearby communities. Educators and youth agency staff are also welcome to attend. Workshops will be divided into three broad areas: college readiness, interpersonal relationships, and advocating for your child. There will also be vendor and exhibitor tables. Breakfast and lunch will be served and on-site childcare will be provided for children 5 years and older. Transportation will be provided for Wyandanch School District families.

Interested parents are invited to attend so we can provide you with information and tools to help your children succeed in school and life as recently outlined by President Obama.
