Dowling College Receives $75,000 Grant From The George I. Alden Trust Funding Enables Technology Upgrade Of Classrooms

Dowling College has received a $75,000 grant from the George I. Alden Trust to upgrade seven traditional classrooms to "Smart" classrooms with numerous media and technology enhancements. The upgrades were recently completed in Dowling's Kramer Science Center at its Rudolph Campus in Oakdale in time for the start of the spring term.

The grant enabled the purchase and installation of ceiling-mounted LCD projectors, DVD/VCR units, and electronic projection screens. The seven rooms were also outfitted with wireless Internet connectivity. In addition, wireless access was extended to most of the three floors of the Kramer Science Center and the adjoining Mayrock Conservatory. This coverage includes most classrooms in the building, as well as many faculty offices.

"These improvements serve a dual purpose: They enhance the ability of our faculty to present their lessons and offer our students the opportunity to work with the latest classroom technologies," said Albert E. Donor, President of Dowling College. "In the past two years these 'Smart' classrooms have become the classroom of choice at Dowling College for both our faculty and students, because they support teaching and learning with easily accessible presentation equipment and high-speed Internet connectivity."

Dr. John Craven, Associate Professor in the School of Education, added, "For many students at Dowling destined to be teachers on Long Island, the 'Smart' classrooms represent the first interface with digital learning environments. This experience is absolutely critical in preparing them to close the digital divide in future classrooms."

The George I. Alden Trust, located in Worcester, Massachusetts, focuses its giving in the area of higher education, predominantly in support of independent undergraduate education.
