Major Williams Grigonis, Senior Naval Science Instructor, Named Dowling College/News 12 Long Island Educator of the Month

OAKDALE, NY – Major Williams Grigonis has encouraged countless of young people to be all that they can be. The caliber of program he has put in place, not just classroom instruction, but service to the community and curricular areas related to aviation and the military, drill competitions as well as leadership training, have given students with all academic abilities a forum to succeed. His leadership skills, coupled with his passion and love for his cadets and his program are unparalleled.

Under Major's the student cadets have achieved sustained excellent and have earned recognition as the "Most Outstanding NJROTC Unit" in the northeastern area. A significant emphasis within the Major's program is college prep and stats say it all; 100% of the juniors and seniors in the unit took the SAT/ACT prep course and test: a total of 101 student cadets participated in organized college campus visits, at least 6 of his students cadets earned a full ride scholarship while others earned numerous partial scholarships. He also has been successful in creating "one unit" of NJROTC in three high schools (Mattituck, Southold and Greenport) that are at least 7 miles apart.

When Major says he needs help in a volunteer activity, many cadets drop what they are doing to volunteer. Several of his graduates are now enrolled in the different U.S. military academies. As a graduate of Southold Jr.-Sr. HS, Major has returned to Southold Jr.-Sr. HS in order to give back to his home town some expertise as a successful military person.

Dr. Clyde Payne, Dean of Dowling's School of Education says, "Mr. Major Williams Grigonis is an amazing educator for the leaders for the world of tomorrow and we are proud to honor him with the Educator of the Month award for his outstanding work in enlightening students in Long Island, once again proving that Long Island produces top educators."
