The Loft Theatre at Dowling College Presents the Classic Rosencrantz
and Guildenstern are Dead
Show Runs from November 28th-December 14th
The Loft Theatre at Dowling College is proud to present Tom
Stoppard's existential tragi-comic farce, Rosencrantz and
Guildenstern are Dead, at the Performing Arts Center. A classic but
seldom performed piece (it debuted on Broadway in 1967), this is one of
Stoppard's first artistic firecrackers written before such Broadway
triumphs as Arcadia, The Real Thing, and Coast of Utopia. Rosencrantz &
Guildenstern are Dead is a non-stop verbal and physical romp which
follows the star-crossed fates of two minor characters in
Shakespeare's Hamlet. When Rosencrantz & Guildenstern appear on
stage, they seem to exist as characters who have come to life outside
the framework of Shakespeare's play. Consequently, they struggle to
figure out who they are, which is which, why they were sent for, and how
they happen to end up dead (as the plot of Hamlet dictates)! Written
in the absurdist spirit of Ionesco and Beckett's Waiting for Godot,
with hints of Charlie Chaplin and the verbal acrobatics of Shakespeare
himself, this is a true theatrical delight.
The Loft production, with a cast of 11, including high-flying acrobats
and clowns, plays Stoppard full-out for laughs. With a New York City
design team and actors from New York City and Long Island, this Loft
Theatre production, directed by Larissa Lury, brings an Off-Broadway
experience to Long Island. Don't miss it!
