Two Dowling College seniors – Lesa Drummond and Jarrod Alexander – have been awarded $100 through the Higher Education Opportunity Program
(H.E.O.P.). The funds were made available from the Long Island Region Professional Organization to honor students for academic achievement
and extra-curricular involvement.
A resident of Bronx, NY, Lesa is majoring in Social Sciences with a minor in oral communications. She has made the Dean's List twice,
the H.E.O.P. Honor Roll eight times, and was recently nominated for "Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges."
As Vice President of Activities in the Student Government Association, Lesa serves as a member of the Annual Theme committee and is actively involved
in the development and planning of various activities for the College community. She has also served as Treasurer of the Pan African-Caribbean Club,
as a member of the Junior Student Review Board, and is a member of the Dowling Warriors Step Team.
Jarrod, a resident of New York City, is majoring in Communication Arts with a minor in Business Management. He has made the Dean's List twice,
the HEOP Honor Roll seven times, and was a member of the National Deans' List in the spring of 2003. While in high school at Humanity Prep in
Manhattan, Jarrod received and award for creative writing. His poetry has been published by the International Library of Poetry. Jarrod is
currently a producer and on-air host for WIRE Radio at Dowling College. He plans to continue his communications education on the graduate level
and pursue a career in broadcasting. Both students plan to continue their education. According to Lesa, her internship at Hariton & D'Angelo
Law Firm as a Medical Recorder Representative was influential in her decision to continue her education in the field of law. "Mr. Tony Nese, Director
of the HEOP Office, and Dr. Kevin Jordan, Assistant Director, were instrumental in providing this opportunity for me," Lesa said. "Everyone
in the office and at Dowling has been very supportive and helpful in guiding my academic and professional choices. Receiving this award is
just one more way that they have made me feel "special." "My experiences during my internship at WNYC Radio during the summer of 2002 and
for Power 105.1 this past summer confirmed my career direction," Jarrod said. "Thanks to the people in the H.E.O.P. office, Mr. Nese, Dr.
Jordan, Gerri and Marge, all of them have been so helpful and supportive," said Jarrod. "They have really expanded my educational experience."
