Help Long Island's Blood Supply at Dowling College's Blood Drive

OAKDALE, NY - Long Island Blood Services will conduct a blood drive at Dowling College's two campuses on Tuesday, April 22, 2008.   The Oakdale campus will accept donations from 9:30 AM to 7:30 PM in Fortunoff Hall.  The Brookhaven campus will accept donations from 3:00 PM to 8:00 PM in the Dorm Building.  The community is welcome to join Dowling College students, faculty and staff in an effort to increase the blood supply for local area hospitals.

On Long Island, only about two percent of those eligible to donate blood actually do so.  Local hospitals require about 800 pints of blood per day. A raffle will be held for all who donate during Dowling's blood drive, including community members.  The prize, a $250 gift card to Linens 'n' Things, will be awarded on April 23, 2008.

In order to donate blood, you must meet the following eligibility criteria:

  • Bring valid ID (such as driver's license) and know your Soc. Sec. number
  • Minimum weight 110 lbs.
  • Ages: 17-76 (16 with parent)
  • Eat well prior to giving blood (low fat foods) and drink fluids
  • No tattoos during past 12 months
Even if you are taking medication for diabetes, high blood pressure, cholesterol or thyroid condition, you may be able to donate blood safely.  Call Long Island Blood Services at 1-800-688-0900 with any medical or travel questions concerning blood donations.
