Ms. Julia Dreyer of the Summit Lane School in the Levittown School District Named Dowling College/News 12 Educator of the Month

OAKDALE, NY - Ms. Julia Dreyer, ESL Teacher of the Summit Lane School in the Levittown School District, has been named a 2007-2008 Dowling College/News 12 Educator of the Month.  Nominations were accepted from schools throughout Nassau and Suffolk counties, and a committee of distinguished educators selected the winners.

Under Ms. Dreyer's leadership, the ESL Program at Summit Lane School has grown from 8 students to the current number of 70 and Ms. Dreyer has helped to shape the program. She has provided inspiration for the school's summer Jump Start program as well as the school's Parent Night.  Ms. Dreyer has developed an extensive knowledge of both rules and regulation governing the services to English Language Learners.

Ms. Dreyer organized the school's before school/after school tutorial program that started as a pilot program and then was extended to all target schools in the district.  She even used her own personal funds to help pay for students participating in the school's outdoor education sleep-away program.  Her parent contacts have helped to build the goodwill segment of the school's ESL program.

Ms. Dreyer has played a major liaison with other staff members with ESL children.  In a letter of recommendation, Mrs. Dreyer is described as the "wind beneath the wings" of the district's ESL program.  She has been both a model and a mentor to newly hired ESL staff members who turn to her for guidance and advice as they grow professionally.  Ms. Dreyer also hosts a mentoring session where the mentoring partners are from Rivkin Radler Law Firm in Uniondale. The program started 8 years ago and continues successfully each year.

Dr. Clyde Payne, Dean of Dowling's School of Education says, "Since Long Island is known for having the best teachers in the nation, and we received so many nominations from across Nassau and Suffolk, Julia Dreyer is truly a remarkable educator."  A special feature announcing Ms. Dreyer's award will air soon on News 12.  In June the award winners and their guests will be honored at a special dinner.
