Golden Lions Win Opener 15-14
Vanessa Moreira's (Selden, NY) goal with 2:49 remaining proved to be the game winner as Dowling edged the Bentley Falcons 15-14 at Golden Lions Field. The win marks the first in program history as Kerri McCabe's squad starts out their inaugural campaign 1-0, Bentley falls to 0-1 with the loss.
Samantha Messino (Shirley, NY) tallied the first goal on a nice fast break feed from Moreira to open the scoring. Bentley would answer back with a 4-1 run, capped by Erica De Silva's (Dartmouth, MA) unassisted tally at 16:20 giving the Falcons a 4-2 lead. Stephanie Cotter (Ridge, NY) would bring the Golden Lion's back as she netted 3 of her 4 goals, the third coming at 6:56 to give Dowling the lead at 6-5. Bentley would tie the game a 6 but with :01 remaining, Lauren Marra (Levittown, NY) capitalized on a free position opportunity giving Dowling a 7-6 advantage going into halftime.
Dowling started the second half strong with three goals in the first two minutes. Bentley would once again fight back, netting four straight of their own, two coming from the stick of Liz Goddard (Acton, MA). The teams would trade goals until 2:49 left in the half and Moreira's tally. Bentley would have their chances in the final two minutes but goaltender Rachael Goldstein (Ridge, NY) was solid between the pipes make huge point blank saves to keep the Golden Lions ahead.
Leading the way for Dowling was Cassandra Cronin (Islip Terrace, NY) with 4 goals, and Kelly Cefalu (East Islip, NY) and Cotter with 3 goals, 1 assist each. Alyssa Ritchie (North Andover, MA) tallied 7 points (2G, 5A) in the loss for Bentley. The Golden Lions travel to SUNY Farmingdale, Saturday, March 15 at 1:00 PM for their next contest.
