High Stakes Testing In Public Schools Subject Of Debate At Dowling College
Advocates, Critics To Square Off On Controversial Issue For Parents, Educators
In what promises to be a lively debate on one of the most controversial issues facing public education today, Dr. Constance Clark, Superintendent of Westbury School District and Louisiana TV talk show hosts and parent-activists C.C. Campbell-Rock and Sandra Hester will face off in "High Stakes Testing in the Public Schools: Effects on Children" on March 18 from 7 p.m.-9 p.m. in the Ballroom at Dowling College's Rudolph Campus in Oakdale. The event is part of Dowling's yearlong celebration of African-American culture, and is free and open to the public.
The discussion will be moderated by Dr. Dale and Dr. Bonnie Johnson, Professors of Education at Dowling College and authors of several books, including "High Stakes: Children, Testing, and Failure in American Schools".
Well known on Long Island as an accomplished public school administrator, Dr. Constance Clark is a character education activist and past director of Upward Bound in Washington, D.C., and a past administrator in the District of Columbia school system.
For nearly four years, Sandra "18 Wheeler" Hester has been host and producer of "The Hester Report", a popular New Orleans television talk show. She is founder and executive director of Parent Empowerment Center, an organization dedicated to teaching parents to become effective advocates for their own children. A graduate of the University of New Orleans, she is a mother of two.
A human rights and education activist and mother of four, C.C. Campbell-Rock is co-host of "Speak Now or Forever Hold Your Peace!", a weekly New Orleans television show, and co-founder of Parents for Educational Justice. She is a graduate of Loyola University of the South and was previously a reporter for The New Orleans Tribune and Louisiana Weekly.
