Ms. Joan D'Urso of Medford Elementary School
Named Dowling College/News 12 Educator of the Month

Ms. Joan D'Urso, Elementary Teacher in Medford Elementary School in the Patchogue-Medford School District, has been named a 2007-2008 Dowling College/News 12 Long Island Educator of the Month. Nominations were accepted from schools throughout Nassau and Suffolk counties, and a committee of distinguished educators selected the winners.
Ms. D'Urso best demonstrates the characteristics of excellence in teaching and is described as extremely imaginative. In a letter of recommendation, she is said to "view her students' world with eyes that see beyond the boundaries of the classroom." Ms. D'Urso is described as having the ability to transform the ordinary into the extraordinary. Ms. D'Urso's students don't just want to learn, they want to learn more.
Recognized as a member of Who's Who Among American Teachers and Cambridge's Who's Who Among America's Professional Women. She is the recipient of MESTRACT grants on three occasions.
Ms. D'Urso has served on the school district's instructional committee and currently serving on the district's technology committee. She has chaired Medford's Site Based Management Team and advises the Technology Club. She also serves as the official photographer for Medford Elementary School and assists with many after school functions. Ms. D'Urso produces each May Medford Memories, a PowerPoint presentation shared with the entire community.
Dr. Clyde Payne, Dean of Dowling's School of Education says, "Since Long Island is known for having the best teachers in the nation, and we received so many nominations from across Nassau and Suffolk, Joan D'Urso is truly a remarkable educator." A special feature announcing Ms. D'Urso's award will air soon on News 12. In June the award winners and their guests will be honored at a special dinner.
