Dowling College Graduate Joseph M. Balcuk Gains National Recognition for Math Invention
Joseph M. Balcuk, M.S., '05, a graduate from Dowling College, spent the past seven years devising a way to revolutionize the experience children have in the classroom. "I wanted to devise a way to bring what entertains students outside school into the classroom," Mr. Balcuk stated. After years of tedious work, he gained recognition by earning an invitation to one of the country's largest mathematics conferences.
A local educational company, Precision Mathematics Corporation, decided to nationally release the educational invention of the Long Island mathematician. The Corporation gathered investors from around the country to make public "The Spoils of Civilization," an educational board game created by math genius Joseph M. Balcuk.
This winter Joseph was chosen to present his research and invention at the National Conference for the Advancement of Mathematics in Dallas, TX. Precision Mathematics Account Executive Katherine Knoepffler stated, "The true genius behind the invention is the versatility to all grade levels. It was never a question that the game would be successful, it was only a question of when."
Using his insight in education and business, he took on the huge task of solely producing and funding "The Spoils of Civilization." The game introduces players' to a real world simulation in which mathematics is used everyday for survival. It has proven to increase student understanding of how social interaction creates economic trends. In addition, it is linked to the Internet website http://www.precisionmath.com, for strategic online classroom play. During a typical school year, students watch for inflation and recession as they invest in a real-time stock market.
Due to the games success, the Precision Mathematics has also decided to release two new projects also designed by Joseph. Both projects will be released nationally this spring. To read more about how these products will expand the walls of the classroom visit www.THEMERBS.com or write to Merb@precisionmath.com. Precision Mathematics Corp. and Joseph have agreed to provide discounts on all materials for all Dowling staff, students, and alumni. Please mention your Dowling affiliation in any inquiries to learn how your classroom can benefit.
