Scholars Discuss Concept Of Race At Dowling College

Special guests Dr. Julie Maybee of Lehman College and Dr. Harvey Cormier of SUNY Stony Brook, will each present their views in "Should We Retain The Concept of Race?" on March 11 from 5:45 p.m. - 7:45 p.m. in the Hunt Room at Dowling College's Rudolph Campus in Oakdale. The event is part of Dowling's yearlong celebration of African-American culture, and is free and open to the public.

Dr. Julie Maybee, Assistant Professor of Philosophy at Lehman College, has written and presented extensively on African and African-American philosophy, among other subjects. She previously taught at the University of Kansas, where she was Assistant Professor of Philosophy and African-American Studies. A founding member of the Alain L. Locke Society, and a member of the American Philosophical Association as well as several other organizations, Dr. Maybee has authored articles on philosophers Hegel, Kierkegaard, and Nietzsche, and on various topics on feminism and race.

Dr. Harvey Cormier is Associate Professor of Philosophy at Stony Brook University. He received his Ph.D. from Harvard University, where he wrote his dissertation with Hilary Putnam and Stanley Cavell. Among his writings are The Truth Is What Works (Rowman and Littlefield, 2000), a book on William James's theory of truth, and essays on diverse subjects including film and modernist art, civil rights and animal rights, Nietzsche's view of freedom, the relationship between the outlooks of William James and his brother Henry, and evolutionary psychology.

Following the speakers' remarks, there will be a period of open discussion.
