Mrs. Pat Jordan-Cowley, Current Fifth Grade Teacher, Pulaski Street
School & Teacher for the Riverhead Central School District, has been
named a 2007-2008 Dowling College/News 12 Long Island Educator of the
Month. Nominations were accepted from schools throughout Nassau and
Suffolk counties, and a committee of distinguished educators selected
the winners.
A letter of recommendation states that Mrs. Jordan-Cowley "Places her
students' needs above everything else and actually drives her
instruction off their academic, emotional, and social needs." Her
love of literature and teaching permeates throughout her classroom and
influences her colleagues throughout the building. Her dedication to
literature is evident, as she is an author and is presently writing a
children's book while her first book is moving towards publication.
She has also conducted Portfolio Book Publishing and Writing Contests
for her students.
An advocate for the environment, she was given the "Save the Bays"
Award for being an exceptional teacher of bay stewardship. She ran the
Tag & Release Program for a species of fish in the Riverhead area and
has fundraised for special environmental field trips.
Mrs. Jordan-Cowley wrote letters to pass the Harriet Tubman Bill and
produced a quilt in her honor that traveled the entire Underground
Railroad route with the Department of the Interior. She has been
affiliated with NASA Teaching Projects, the Toshiba Project for Gifted
and Talented Students and has organized letter and gift package projects
